ALBERTA BUYS LAND FOR POTENTIAL HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT

Space For Calgary, Edmonton Terminals Purchased Despite Lack Of Firm Plans

A high-speed train linking Alberta’s two largest cities may be years – if not decades – away, but the province hasn’t wasted time in finding land for potential passenger terminals.

Transportation Minister Luke Ouellette says the province has purchased property in both Calgary and Edmonton, despite the fact that a study into whether the rail link would be worth it has yet to be completed.

He says the province is seriously considering a high-speed rail line between the two cities at some point in the future; however, the government has repeatedly said the multi-billion dollar project would require private investment.

Ouellette compares the purchase to one made 30 years ago, when the province bought land for ring roads now being built in Calgary and Edmonton.

The purchase price of the land has not been disclosed.
