CRUISE INTO FIRST NATIONS HISTORY
March 27, 2007
Unique Broughton Archipelago Adventure From B.C.’s Mothership Adventures

The Aboriginal history of the islands of Queen Charlotte Strait, including Alert Bay and the U'mista Cultural Centre, can soon be explored by cruise yacht, through eco-tourism company Mothership Adventures.

The company operates the 23-passenger Columbia III and has collaborated with the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations of Alert Bay on an exploratory summertime cruise through the coastal rainforest islands of the Broughton Archipelago.

At the renowned U'mista Cultural Centre and Museum, First Nations' guides introduce the complexities of the potlatch ceremony with its myths, masks and regalia. Nearby on Alert Bay is the village "Big House," in which visitors can witness chanting, drumming and traditional dances.

The tour also visits contemporary First Nations carvers, who can fashion cedar trees into canoes, masks and poles. Guests travel to ancient village sites, including Mimkwamlis, site of a very large potlatch held during the prohibition of traditional cultural ceremonies.
